Why BillBook exists

Many small businesses in India issue a modest number of invoices a month but are asked to pay a monthly subscription, create an online account and keep their customer data on someone else's server. BillBook was built for people who want a simpler arrangement: pay once, open the app in a browser, and keep the records on their own computer.

Who it's for

• Small shops, traders and retailers issuing GST tax invoices
• Freelancers and consultants billing clients in the same state or other states
• Owners who want to track business expenses and GST paid on purchases
• Anyone who prefers their billing data to stay on their own device

What BillBook does

• Creates GST invoices with HSN/SAC, CGST + SGST for intrastate and IGST for interstate supplies
• Keeps a client list with GSTIN and state
• Exports invoices as PDF
• Tracks expenses and the GST paid on them
• Shows a dashboard of sales, dues and expenses
• Optional receipt scanning (OCR runs in the browser) and Voice Mode where the browser supports speech recognition
• Exports and restores all data as a JSON backup file

What BillBook does not do

• It does not file GST returns or connect to the GST portal
• It does not generate e-invoices (IRN) or e-way bills
• It has no cloud sync, team logins or multi-device access
• It is not a full accounting, inventory or payroll system
• It does not replace advice from a Chartered Accountant

The local-first approach

BillBook is a set of files you open in your browser. Your invoices, clients and expenses are saved in that browser's local storage on your device — not on a BillBook server. Core invoicing works without an internet connection.

The trade-off is responsibility: if you clear browser data, switch browsers or lose the device, the data goes with it unless you have exported a JSON backup. We recommend exporting a backup regularly and keeping a copy somewhere safe.
